This ‘fantastic’ war film sees Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet with an English accent as he plays one of history’s most memorable monarchs, King Henry V.
Released in 2019, the A-list actor was just 23 when he played the historical figure in The King, now receiving high praise from viewers online. Based on several Shakespeare plays, including Henriad, the film is a retelling of events when the Prince of Wales rose to the throne following the death of his father, Henry IV.
During his father’s reign, the film shows the young prince and his success in the military, from fighting in the Welsh Revolt to playing a key role in the Battle of Shrewsbury at just 16. However, after spending so much time trying to avoid the limelight, the death of his father leaves him, as heir to the throne, no choice but to be at the centre of it all.
Now, the fresh-faced king has no choice but to embrace his newfound power while grappling with the emotional ties to his past life. Caught in the middle of palace politics and the war his predecessor left behind, viewers watch as King Henry V becomes a hero in his short-lived time on the throne.
A Rotten Tomatoes review praises the film, saying: “This movie is way underrated, and I’m not sure why it’s not talked about more, especially in regards to Chalamet’s performance. I’ve seen it 4 times, and each time I enjoy it more and more. It’s so well designed and seamless. Every time I watch it, there are new things I notice and appreciate. I’m always especially in awe of the closing scenes.”
Another review said: “This is how you make a solid one-off movie without making it overlong and tedious. Good performances and cinematography. The battles were realistic as well.”
Starring alongside Timothée Chalamet is another household name in his own right, British heartthrob Robert Pattinson. He plays the Dauphin, while Lily-Rose Depp appears as Princess Catherine of Valois, but it’s Chalamet’s performance as the king that has viewers completely captivated.
An impressed viewer shared their love for the actor in this role. They wrote: “Chalamet not only showcases his remarkable acting skills but also solidifies his status as a true movie star.
“Unlike many actors who might gravitate toward light-hearted roles or superhero franchises, he is strategically selecting projects that highlight his talent and keep him in the conversation for awards—demonstrating a commitment to meaningful filmmaking without compromising his artistic integrity.”
While the film is draped in history, those who aren’t familiar with the real-life story of King Henry V can still enjoy the Shakespeare adaptation for its battles, romance and fanatic performances.
Proving so, one viewer shared: “I absolutely enjoyed it while having little to no knowledge about the actual historical circumstances.
“All I can say is that it had me glued to the screen from beginning to end, and the performance of the actors was incredible.” In agreement, another viewer simply said: “One of the best movies on Netflix. Maybe the best.”
