Amazon Prime Video has added to its current collection one of the most beloved classic British films – and fans of musicals will be delighted. Prime has added a slew of titles to its catalogue over the last few days, and with so much to choose from, it’s easy for even some of the very best flicks to get overlooked in the crowd of content. However, some Amazon Prime subscribers might not be aware that one of the greatest classic musicals has been added to the streaming service.
Among the titles that were added to Amazon Prime Video on June 19 is Oliver!, a beloved British musical that has stood the test of time and is still adored by many. Oliver! has become a cultural phenomenon, being adapted into a sell-out West End show and remaining a family favourite musical. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of more than 90%, the film is still popular and is set to delight many Amazon Prime subscribers.
Oliver! was released in 1968 and is based on the iconic Charles Dickens novel. The story follows nine-year-old Oliver Twist, who falls in with a group of street-urchin pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger.
The story is set in Victorian England, and while it was written almost 200 years ago, it remains an iconic piece of literature. The film is instantly recognisable for songs such as You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two and Consider Yourself.
Despite being released more than 50 years ago, Oliver! has more than 50,000 online reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. “The greatest cast and crew ever,” said one fan.
Another wrote: “A timeless classic. Great story, great acting and great memorable songs. By far the best version of Oliver Twist.”
A third wrote: “The last of the great big screen musicals, with brilliant production design, characteristically strong direction by Carol Reed, a wonderful score and lyrics by Lionel Bart, and marvellous choreography by Onna White. Ron Moody and Shani Wallis take the acting honours, and Mark Lester is a winsome Oliver.”
A fourth said: “This is one of, if not the best, musical ever. I’ve loved this movie ever since I was a young child, and I still love it to this day, no matter how many times I’ve seen it (believe me, it’s a lot!). I’m not a very big fan of musicals of any sort, but this musical is just perfect. If you love great musical songs and a great storyline, such as Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, then you will love this fun adaptation.”
