As we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two in 2025, Netflix is set to release an incredible new documentary telling the story of a period of the terrible conflict which still leaves scars on the face of Britain today. Britain and the Blitz will look back at the horrors of the devastating German air raids, using stunning restored archival footage and first-hand testimonies from the people who were there.
With the number of people who lived through the horrors of the Blitz dwindling, the film will preserve their experiences for history, and bring one the darkest periods in British history to life. The Blitz ran from September 1940 until May the following year, and saw German forces carry out bombing raids against towns, cities, and industrial targets across the UK.
In total between 40,000 and 43,000 civilians were killed, and up to 139,000 injured, while two million houses were damaged or destroyed entirely.
Netflix‘s description of the documentary reads: “This immersive documentary brings history to life through vividly restored archival footage and first-hand accounts of WWII Britain during the Blitz.” The trailer for the documentary features incredible colour footage showing the devastation of the bombing, as adults and children alike rush to safety.
Dramatic dogfights in the skies above Britain are also seen, as brave firefighters battle blazes sweeping through towns and cities. A radio broadcast can be heard declaring “history’s most critical days are just beginning”, with the chilling voice of Adolf Hitler screaming “we will erase their cities!”
The voice of one man is heard saying: “I remembered my big sister rushing towards me, the teacher screaming to us to get under the table. Then the bomb hit.” This is followed by a poignant shot of an elderly man breaking down in tears.
The famous Spirit of the Blitz is also front and centre, as Brits are seen rallying to help those in need, while our army of female engineers get fighter jets into top shape, and young evacuees wave happily from train windows. The indomitable British spirit in the face of German tyranny is also seen in the face of wartime prime minister Winston Churchill – complete with iconic cigar.
Churchill’s unmistakable voice is heard saying the Blitz had paved the way “to a broader solidarity that we could ever have planned if we had not marched together through the fire”.
According to What’s on Netflix, Britain and the Blitz is directed by Ella Wright and produced by 72 Films. Netflix and 72 Films previously collaborated on the six-episode documentary series World War II: From the Frontlines, which was released in 2024 and won a News and Documentary Emmy for Outstanding Graphic Design and Music Composition.
Britain and the Blitz will be released on Netflix on Monday, May 5.
