Apple TV fans have just days to binge ‘addictive’ period drama based on beloved book | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

If you’re addicted to watchable and wild plots, then fans only have a few days to binge the first season of The Buccaneers on Apple TV+. The rousing feminist period drama, based on the classic novelist Edith Wharton’s unfinished book, is set to release its highly anticipated second season this week. Taking place against the backdrop of America’s Gilded Age in the late 19th century, the first season follows the story of five American women who travel to England to find a husband. With plenty of jaw-dropping twists, bonds of sisterhood, and lots of corsets, the first season received plenty of critical acclaim, with viewers at home giving it a 96 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

One person said online, “It’s intelligent, well-acted, funny, uplifting, and addictive!” Another chimed in, “Very easy and enjoyable to watch, pure escapism, loveable characters, beautiful scenery and costumes, great soundtrack.”

The cast in this swoon-worthy drama includes Kristine Frøseth, Christina Hendricks, Alisha Boe, Josh Dylan, and Imogen Waterhouse, with special appearances from Greg Wise, Adam James, and Fenella Woolgar.

The second season is also expected to be unmissable, with Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester joining the cast. Speaking about the series renewal, creator Katherine Jakeways said to Glamour, “It’s been a complete thrill to watch people all over the world fall in love with these characters, who’ve been brought to such vibrant life by our spectacular cast.”

She added, “We know season one left audiences desperate to know what’s next for our buccaneers, so I’m absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to explore the further adventures of this smart, joyful, messy sisterhood.”

The official description for season two stated, “In the first season of The Buccaneers, a group of fun-loving young American girls exploded into the tightly corseted London of the 1870s… setting hearts racing and kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash. Now, the Buccaneers are no longer the invaders — England is their home. In fact, they’re practically running the place. Nan is the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the country.

“Conchita is Lady Brightlingsea, heroine to a wave of young American heiresses. And Jinny is on every front-page, wanted for the kidnap of her unborn child. All of the girls have been forced to grow up and now have to fight to be heard, as they wrestle with romance, lust, jealousy, births and deaths… themes consuming all women of any age, no matter what year it is. Last time we got a taste of England. This time we’re in for a veritable feast.”

The Buccaneers season one is available to watch on Apple TV+. Season Two starts airing weekly on Wednesday, June 18.
