28 Years Later 2 release date – Cillian Murphy back in Jimmy Savile cult sequel | Films | Entertainment

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 28 Years Later hits cinemas today as the first of the duo’s new movie trilogy in the British zombie franchise.

The first two films were shot back-to-back, although Boyle only directed part 1, with Nia DaCosta helming the second.

28 Years Later concluded with Spike coming across Jack O’Connell’s Sir Jimmy Crystal, the leader of a cult of Jimmys, where all the members dress like the infamous late sex offender Jimmy Savile.

His villain is set to play a major role in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which once again stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as scavenger Jamie, the father of Spike, who is missing on the mainland.

What’s particularly exciting for fans is that Cillian Murphy is reprising his 28 Days Later character Jim in the upcoming film, over two decades on. Presumably, he’s part of the cult given his name. Although, since he was the hero of the original film who saved two women from being raped by soldiers taking advantage of the post-apocalyptic societal disorder, we’d presume he’s also an adversary of the Savile cult. Perhaps he’s infiltrated the group or is part of it against his will? Emma Laird and Maura Bird co-star as Jimmima and Jimmy Jones, other members of the cult.

Meanwhile, Boyle is planning on directing the third and final film, which has yet to be green-lit. This is presumably because Sony will decide the budget based on the first film’s box office this weekend.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hits cinemas on January 16, 2026.
